Avro Lancaster

"AVRO LANCASTER"....illustration by Lance Russwurm

AVRO LANCASTER Mk X

Illustration by Lance Russwurm 2000 Labusch Skywear

The Lancaster has gone down in history as the most significant aircraft in Bomber Command's arsenal. American aircrew in their fabled B-17's could only wonder why they risked their lives to deliver a mere 1/3 to 1/4 of the Lancaster's payload. The legendary deeds of the Lancaster include the famous "Dambusters" raid and the sinking of the German pocket battleship "Tirpitz".

During World War 2, Lancs flew 156,192 sorties and dropped 608,612 tons of bombs. Modified versions were able to carry the 12,000 pound "Tallboy" Bomb and the 22,000 pound "Grand Slam" or "Earthquake" bomb. Variations of this airframe were still flying operationally in the eighties.
